How to Raise Palm Oil-Free Kids: Simple Steps for a Sustainable Home

Spread the love

Raising palm oil-free kids has become an important part of my journey. It´s been more than 10 years since I made my first interview for an anthropology website dedicated to the palm oil problematic. I interviewed the famous Czech primatologist Stanislav Lhota and then saw a documentary called Green Desert by young Slovak filmmaker Michal Gálik. Since then, so many things have come into my life, like my firstborn son and then twins. Before that, I was very picky and read every package just to be sure that it did not contain palm oil, believing that in doing so, I was contributing ‘something’ to the world’s rainforests.

During my interview with Stanislav Lhota, he shared eye-opening insights about the devastating effects of palm oil plantations on the environment and local communities. He explained how oil palm plantations are built at the expense of lowland rainforests, wiping out the richest biodiversity areas on the planet.

The destruction affects countless species, including orangutans, which are often killed as they are seen as pests by plantation owners. The impact extends beyond wildlife—local communities lose their traditional farmland and fishing areas as palm oil plantations consume groundwater, leading to the extinction of entire rivers and causing severe pollution.

Mr. Lhota also discussed how consumer behavior is the key driver of change. By avoiding palm oil, individuals can significantly impact the industry and push for sustainable alternatives. His words have remained with me for over a decade and have influenced the way I approach sustainability within my own family.

With kids, this has taken on even more exciting concepts, as you have an even greater positive influence—you are teaching them how important it is to take care of our planet, with all its beautiful animals and plants. So, we are quite a palm-oil-free, eco-friendly, and organic-food family—maybe we can even say a tribe—with two dogs (who also eat organic dog food, and if I have more time, I even cook for them!).

Anyway, let’s dive in: How to Teach Kids to Avoid Palm Oil and Be Environmentally Conscious!

Why Avoid Palm Oil?

Palm oil is one of the most widely used ingredients in food, cosmetics, and household products—but its production is also one of the leading causes of deforestation, habitat destruction, and climate change. Teaching kids about the impact of palm oil and how to make sustainable choices can be a wonderful way to nurture their environmental consciousness from an early age.

Palm oil causes deforestation, habitat destruction, and climate change.

Palm oil plantations are responsible for large-scale deforestation, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia, where rainforests are cleared to make way for oil palm trees. This destruction threatens countless species, including orangutans, tigers, and elephants, and contributes to carbon emissions that accelerate global warming.

Additionally, palm oil production often involves unethical labour practices, including child labor and poor working conditions. By making informed choices, we can contribute to a better future for both people and the planet.

How to Identify Palm Oil in Everyday Products

Palm oil is tricky to spot because it appears under many different names on ingredient labels. Some of the most common include:

  • Vegetable oil (unless specified otherwise)
  • Palm kernel oil
  • Sodium laureth sulfate (found in shampoos and soaps)
  • Stearic acid (used in cosmetics and cleaning products)
  • Glyceryl stearate (a common emulsifier in skincare)

A great way to involve kids in this process is by turning grocery shopping into a detective game! Give them a list of alternative names for palm oil and challenge them to check labels and find palm oil-free products—helping them become true palm oil-free kids!

Fun Ways to Teach Kids About Sustainable Choices

Make It a Challenge – Set a family goal to go palm oil-free for a week or a month. Let kids help pick out alternative products and keep track of their discoveries.

DIY Alternatives – Cooking and crafting together is a great way to avoid palm oil. Try baking homemade cookies instead of buying processed snacks or making natural soap instead of using store-bought brands that contain palm oil.

Connect with Nature – Helping children develop a love for nature makes them more likely to protect it. Take them on forest walks, teach them about the animals affected by deforestation, or even let them plant trees in your garden.

Read Books & Watch Documentaries – Stories can make complex topics easier for children to understand. Books like There’s an Orangutan in My Bedroom by James Sellick explain palm oil’s impact in a kid-friendly way. Short nature documentaries about rainforests can also inspire them to care about the environment.

The Boho Mum’s Perspective: Small Changes, Big Impact

Teaching kids to avoid palm oil isn’t about being perfect—it’s about raising awareness and making small changes that add up over time. Every label they read, every conscious choice they make, and every product they switch helps protect our planet and its wildlife.

By encouraging kids to think critically about what they consume, we empower them to become mindful, eco-conscious individuals who care about their impact on the world. Raising palm oil-free kids means teaching them to make informed, ethical choices, ensuring a healthier future for both them and the planet. And that’s a beautiful lesson to pass on.
