Czech Peony Field: Visiting Senice na Hané with Kids

A Czech Peony Field, Childhood Moments, and the Beauty of Seasons

A Czech peony field in full bloom is a little piece of magic — and returning each year with our child has become a cherished ritual. There’s something timeless about stepping into nature’s rhythm, letting it remind us how quickly these moments pass. Peonies bloom so fast, just like childhood itself: one moment they’re buds full of promise, and the next, their petals are falling.

These small traditions began at Little Budds Peony Farm in West Sussex, and this year they led us to visit the Czech peony fields. Noticing the changing seasons and slowing down to simply be together helps us hold onto something precious. These moments capture not just the beauty of flowers but the spirit of childhood itself.

After our move to Prague, I was wondering how we would continue our little family June tradition. To be honest, it wasn’t easy to find a Czech peony field, as the PYO (Pick-Your-Own) concept isn’t very common here yet — especially not for peonies. Eventually, I found just one (but a truly beautiful) peony field in a stunning part of the Czech Republic: Moravia, specifically in Senice na HanéPivoňky z Hané.

When I came across them on Google, I reached out via Instagram to ask if it would be possible to visit with my oldest boy. At this point, I had already let go of my romantic idea of bringing the whole family — our twins are three now and at that wonderfully cheeky stage of life. Rather than admiring the beauty of the peonies, they would surely pick them… and scatter petals everywhere! Since this is a carefully run, family-owned field and not a PYO field, I had to be realistic about my artistic aspirations.

A Peony Field Dream: Mother–Daughter Retreat in Moravia

As it was just after Mother’s Day, I invited my mum to join me and the kids for a special mother–daughter retreat to Moravia, to soak in the beauty of the Haná region. I had been in touch with the lovely owners of a Czech peony field for some time, and when the day finally came, I was beyond excited to see it in person.

They had kindly informed me in advance that not all the peonies would be in full bloom, as many had been harvested early so they could last longer and blossom in customers’ homes. Still, I knew the visit would be worth it.

I had a plan—and this is how I usually approach travel with kids. If there’s something I want to see, I make sure the kids have plenty of fun first. So I scheduled our visit to the peony field for around 4 in the afternoon, giving us time to enjoy the day in a charming Moravian town. We explored local playgrounds, had a lovely lunch, took a walk, and eventually the twins fell asleep in the car.

Since it was a warm spring day, we would never leave the children in their car seats unattended. My mum kindly stayed in the car, parked in the shade along the field path with all the windows open, while I took only my eldest son with me. And to be honest—it felt like a dream. Not only because of the breathtaking beauty of the Moravian peony field, but also because of the rare and intentional time I got to spend with just my oldest boy. These are the kinds of memories I’ll treasure forever.

The owners greeted us so warmly. After a lovely chat, they gave us an hour to explore and enjoy the field. Just as we were completely immersed in the moment, my mum called—”Hurry up, the twins are waking!” Lucas had the most wonderful time. He’s such a gentle, romantic soul—he even came up with a sweet little play about two peonies, like a mum and dad, having a wedding. It was absolutely heart-melting!

Of course, we took loads of photos and videos to freeze the moment in time. I can’t wait to see what next year brings—perhaps another dreamy peony field somewhere in Europe. And our twins? They had a beautiful nap right next to this romantic landscape. A perfect day.
